Life Scrolls Exhibit at MOSH
When Memorial Park Association disinterred the Life Scrolls in 2018 for the purposes of knowing the names of the Florida Fallen, it was also with the hope of learning more about the men and women who served and lost their lives during World War I. Additionally, there was concern that the scrolls may have been damaged by Hurricane Irma. The scrolls were indeed waterlogged and, some thought, beyond salvage. Fortunately, the scrolls were mostly restored and are on display at a special exhibit from November 2021 to March 2022 at the Museum of Science & History. The exhibit — designed by Jacksonville creative agency Wingard — also includes World War I artifacts and memorabilia, as well as a video about the scrolls restoration process. Learn more here.
Thank you to the exhibit sponsors which include William J. Hicklin, Jr. Fund, BDO, Wingard, Preston and Joan Haskell, Jacksonville Historical Society, VyStar Credit Union and YMCA of Florida’s First Coast!
Balustrade completed Despite July’s brutal heat, workers from Intron Technologies and the City of Jacksonville Parks & Recreation Department wrapped up the project to replace more than 600 feet of concrete balustrade. Lamp posts were added to the top of the railing, reminiscent of the original plan developed by the Olmsted Brothers in 1922. After the temporary barriers were removed on July 20, 2021, visitors posted their approval on Facebook:
“It was a long wait, but well worth it.” — Barbara L. “Thank you for bringing it back better than ever.” — Elaine M.
“So happy to see it come together.” — John R.
