Spring 2022
Happy Birthday, Frederick Law Olmsted!
2022 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted, social reformer and founder of American landscape architecture. Olmsted’s sons, John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., were responsible for the design and landscaping of Memorial Park after Ninah Cummer invited the Olmsted Brothers to have a representative come to Jacksonville to discuss the park 100 years ago in 1922.
The National Association for Olmsted Parks (NAOP), of which Memorial Park Association is a member, has created a website, olmsted200.org, to acknowledge and celebrate Olmsted’s birth. The year-long celebration includes an invitation to the public to share their Olmsted story and Memorial Park Association is pleased to share the story submitted by Mark Krancer, owner of Kram Kran Photo, and ardent park supporter since 2014. Mark’s love of the park has produced hundreds of spectacular images, including the one shown above, shot from a small aircraft on January 29, 2022.

The Life Scrolls on Display Don’t forget to visit the Life Scrolls exhibit at the Museum of Science & History! The exhibit closes there March 20, and will re-open in the Sky Gallery at Jacksonville International Airport July1.
In the meantime, the exhibit received some nice press from local media: Arbus (click here to view) The Resident Community News (click here to view) Liberty Life Media (click here to view)
Students visiting the exhibit will receive a coloring page specially created for the exhibit in partnership with colorjax.com. The Jacksonville-focused coloring book is curated by Anna Claire Hodges and drawn by artist Jen Jedlicka. You can purchase your copy of the coloring book by visiting colorjax.com. We are thankful for this partnership!

Projects Continue in the Park Contractors for the City of Jacksonville are currently repointing the steps around the pool of Life sculpture. This work should be completed in about a week.
Construction will soon begin on one of the largest hardscape projects to be undertaken in the park. Proceeding according to the 2013 Master Plan with funds raised through the Spirit of Victory Campaign, design documents have been finalized for the reconstruction and refurbishment along the Esplanade. This will serve as a beautiful complement to the new balustrade along the river’s edge.
